Tra le due principali famiglie di Verona, i Capuleti e i Montecchi, esiste un odio atavico che sfocia in frequenti risse e uccisioni. E il destino vuole che Romeo Montecchi e Giulietta Capuleti, si incontrino e si innamorino perdutamente durante una festa.
Il buon frate Lorenzo li sposa segretamente nella speranza che il loro matrimonio possa portare le due famiglie alla riconciliazione. Sventuratamente, Romeo si imbatte in una rissa, uccide Tibaldo, cugino di Giulietta, e viene condannato in esilio a Mantova.
Frattanto, per sfuggire al matrimonio, impostole dai genitori, con il Conte Paris, Giulietta, seguendo le istruzioni del frate francescano, beve un narcotico che le causa una morte apparente. Romeo, per un malaugurato contrattempo, non è informato dello stratagemma, escogitato dal frate e dalla sua donna amata. Alla ferale notizia, Romeo ritorna a Verona e si avvelena sulla tomba di Giulietta, dopo averla baciata per l'ultima volta. Quando la fanciulla, destatasi, vede il
corpo esanime di Romeo, si uccide col pugnale dell'amato. Le due famiglie, commosse dalla vista dei cadaveri dei due giovani, si riconciliano.

Plot

The Montagues and the Capulets, the two powerful families of Verona, have hated each other for long. Romeo, son of old Lord Montague, and Juliet, Capulet's daughter fall deeply in love and turn to Friar Lawrence for a secret marriage. The friar consents as he hopes their union may put an end to the rivalry between the two families.
Romeo is involved in a street quarrel and kills Tybalt, Juliet's cousin. He is punished by the Prince Ascalus and is banished to Mantua. In the meantime, Lord Capulet decides to marry Juliet to count Paris. Juliet hates her suitor and goes to Friar Lawrence for help. He gives her a potion that will render her apparently lifeless for 42 hours. The friar will warn Romeo, who will rescue her from the vault on her awakening and will carry her to Mantua. The friar's message to Romeo fails. And when he is erroneously informed that Juliet is dead,
he goes to ber resting place to commit suicide dy poisoning himself. Juliet awakens and finds Romeo dead by her side, and the cup still in his hands. In a fit of sorrow she stabs herself to death.
The two families, faced by the tragic results of their enmity, are reconciled and erect a gold statue in honour of the two unfortunate lovers.
